However, you can still meet the 20 finalists and learn what makes them beautiful!

Fate Looms: Reviewing Wanted
admin | 30 June, 2008 12:02
It's been a while since we did one of these. Two things you should know.
• I haven't seen but two movies in the theater for the entirety 2008, so far missing out on a couple of flicks I was very excited about, including No Country For Old Men and Indiana Jones.
• I am not one of those people totally enamored with Angelina Jolie. She's a comely lass, but I've seen less drooling carrying a pan of bacon through a shelter for undernourished dogs.
Then why, in God's name, would I choose a beautiful Sunday evening to go see Wanted? Well, some good friends invited me and I'm susceptible to peer pressure. Find out what I think of slo-mo bullets, Secret Societies and the such, after the jump.

What to read while speculating just how much extra they paid Angelina for that full-on butt shot in Wanted.
• Christine Daues is preggers again. Congrats! Maybe she'll celebrate by once again taking the Cardinals on-field gig in the dead of summer. And maybe not. Chatter

The Set List: Pre-holiday edition
admin | 27 June, 2008 15:59
Ask around—we think you'll find that this weekend is the one in which everyone charges his or her batteries, kickin' it at home or with the fam in anticipation of a (in some cases) four-day holiday weekend that will feature much sun and golden-clearish liquid.
That said, there are still things to do, and it is the Set List's job to make you aware of them. So, without further ado, we present the best of the weekend of June 27-29. Don't say we didn't do anything for you.
(More)Tour of Missouri: Part Deux
admin | 26 June, 2008 09:55
The Tour of Missouri is (officially) returning to Springfield on Tuesday, September 9. The Queen City will once again host the second stage of the statewide* cycling competition, which will begin in Clinton and end at the intersection of Trafficway and Kimbrough, near the Mediacom Ice Park.
The Stage 2 features a few changes—instead of following 160 through Willard, the race will cut through the town and take Greene County AB south. It will again enter Springfield on Division Street, this time bypassing Commercial Street (due to streetscape work, the PR says) and heading south on Jefferson for a finishing circuit around downtown.
Overall, the race is not much different from last year's inaugural Tour. The biggest change is the starting point—St. Joseph. Riders will go from St. Joe to Kansas City on Day 1, then pick up the next stage in Clinton.
Branson will once again host an individual time trial in Stage 3. The race also passes through Lebanon, Rolla, St. James, Jefferson City, Hermann, St. Charles and St. Louis on the way to its finish on Sunday, September 14.

The GO Team: Catch some baseball tonight or win GMA Encore tickets
admin | 25 June, 2008 08:38
Catch the GO Team tonight at the Texas League All-Star Game at Hammons Field. Come early and watch the crowd-favorite Home Run Derby at 6 p.m. The Liverpool Legends will also perform prior to the game, which begins at 7:10 p.m. After the game, stick around for the fireworks display, as well as a party on the patio featuring live music from Hot Switch.

Now GO is throwing an encore GMA party on Friday, July 11 where a couple of the top vote-getters, plus our judges' pick for Best Band, will come together for the summer’s best live music event, hosted by GO and Q102. Join us at Cartoons (GMA Winner Best Live Music Venue), featuring live music by Hotbox (GMA Winner Best Band) plus music by DJ Vinyl Richie (GMA Winner Best DJ). We don't usually truck with spam or e-mail craziness, but since this came to us (well, actually sister mag 417 Magazine) via 417mag.com's manual, online "submit a story idea" form, we don't mind sharing.
What's it about? Pick the most mind-boggling topic you can possibly think of, add some famous clevage, a long-retired German head of state and a threat of FBI inquiry. Then you might be scratching the surface. Maybe.
Read the zaniness, after the jump.
(More)SSLYBY making indie inroads in LA
admin | 23 June, 2008 14:11
Former staff writer Evan Fisk, the lone, unpaid member in GO Magazine's West Coast bureau (and literally, we make him work out of a smallish chest of drawers), tells us Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin's "Modern Mystery," off the new album, Pershing, is getting some pretty significant spinnage on LA's top indie rock station.
Says Evan:
"They're playing SSLYBY's "Modern Mystery" on the biggest and best Indie Rock station in L.A., Indie 103.1. (Rolling Stone magazine named Indie 103.1 the best station in the country last year. You can listen to it under the "Alternative" tab on your iTunes radio list.)
The DJ introduced it by saying 'there are a lot of weird indie band names out there, but this one is probably the weirdest...' Then something about how critics all love them and the new album is really good."
Readers: Anytime you hear of a local band getting out-of-area buzz, do let us know about it.

The Set List: A mea culpa
admin | 21 June, 2008 11:22
The Set List apologizes profusely for the lack of a Friday afternoon post. The Set List's grandma passed and, well, The Set List needed a mental health day and didn't make the proper prior Set List plans.
We hope you'll forgive us, and enjoy this abbreviated weekend planner.
(More)The GO Team: See you Thursday night!
admin | 18 June, 2008 10:24
If you are a virgin GOnectioner, it’s your turn to join the GO Team Thursday, June 19th, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Trolley’s Downtown Bar & Grille (107 Park Central Square). GOnection is your ticket to fresh networking with Springfield’s most fun movers and shakers. Don’t worry, it’s completely free (and yes, some complimentary apps will be served). GO would like to thank Kum & Go and Miller Chill (guys get excited; the Miller Chill girls will be present) for sponsoring this month’s GOnection—you can bet there'll be some prize giveaways, and with Kum & Go on board, that might just mean FREE GAS. But you'll have to show up to see for sure. Remember: GOnection is held the 3rd Thursday of every month. Hope to see you there!
Also, this is the final weekend to see Cyrano de Bergerac at MSU’s Tent Theatre. Today through June 21 you can see the French classic story performed by MSU’s Department of Theatre and Dance. Opening night of You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown is next Wednesday and will show through June 20, and again June 30-July 3rd. Don’t forget to check out GO’s Contest page and enter to win tickets for the Saturday, June 28 show.
Finally, GO is giving away tickets to Seussical: The Musical at Landers Theatre. Visit our contest page and enter to win tickets (are you feeling lucky?). Seussical: The Musical will be showing June 19-22 and June 26-29th at at Lander Theatre (see springfieldlittletheatre.org for specific showtimes). Tickets are $15-$25.
They closed Paradise and moved it to the south side
admin | 17 June, 2008 09:00
An e-mail from friend of the magazine James Johnson confirmed what we'd feared for a while: Paradise Bar & Grill, the reformed gentlemen's club-turned-bar/restaurant on Commercial Street, is no more.
But the good news is, James is still in the biz. Yeseterday, Mama Rose's restaurant opened at 1533 W. Battlefield (near Kansas Expressway). James promises "great country cookin'", which, we suspect, will please his gregarious, home-spun nature much more than slinging pitchers to C-Street stragglers and college kids.
So check it out! Springfield needs some (non Heritage Cafeteria) sould food, and this may just be it!

The Set List Built the Ark (Brother Set List Built the Ark)
admin | 13 June, 2008 16:04
So think it'll rain?
Even as The Set List tries to type this, and finally turn its thoughts to the weekend, a family of ducks is knocking on our door, seeking refuge for the weekend. We have nothing to give them but Miller Lite and a toilet bowl to swim in (Get off the can, Tony!), but we'll do our best.
Thankfully, the weather looks better for Saturday and Sunday, and there's enough to do to make us forget rainy Friday—at least until those ducks have made a mess of the office by Monday morning.
