Just look outside; how much more depressing can it get? Cold, rainy... it's like a cold waiting to happen. The Set List has half a mind to curl up all weekend with a bucket of cider and all the nerd flicks it can handle. But no, The Set List will overcome.
It helps that there's a lot of stuff to do the next three days, including a bittersweet "so long" to one of Springfield's best-known bands, a big-name comedy tour, and an epic nine-venue, 45-band "concert crawl" all over town.
See? We're feeling better already.
Friday
The Whitest Light farewell show w/ Cloud City, The Bypass, 8 p.m., $10
The ex-happyendings fella's have been playing sporadically for the last couple of years, and now they're making it official. After tonight, The Whitest Light will be no more. Catch them one more time at Randy Bacon's Studio, along with Cloud City and The Bypass. We won't tell anyone if you cry.
Fuddy Meers at Vandivort 2nd Stage, 7:30 p.m., $14-$16
Vandivort's quirky and savagely funny comedy focuses on a woman who has lost her memory, and must depend on the weirdos around her to help her figure out who she is. Just the second true production since Vandivort took over the 2nd Stage, but it looks promising.
Bob & Tom Comedy All-Stars, 7 p.m., $31.50
The morning-radio team of Bob and Tom bring a host of comedians to the Shrine Mosque tonight, including Drew Hastings, Bob Zany, Greg Hahn, Costaki Economopoulos, Greg Warren, Henry Phillips and Donnie Baker. Tickets are only on sale at Metrotix outlets until 7 p.m., so act fast if you wanna yuk it up en masse.
Saturday
FourFourFest, 9 p.m., $10 or $1 per band
45 bands, nine venues, one price (and a good one at that). We're not sure how you can find a better value in Springfield. Check out thefourfour.com to see the full lineup, but GO's picks include Brannon Powers's set at Ebbets Field, the rarely seen AcuMen at the High Life, and The Verbs and Ilijah at The Outland. If you don't want the wristband, you can squat at a single venue or two for $1 per band.
Bond at College Station 14, multiple showings, $9
By now you know that the College Station theater is open, and that the new 007 movie has premiered. Reviews are iffy, but it's still a "happening." If you have to see a movie tonight, make it this one, at this theater (especially since the Moxie is still on hiatus).
Springfield Symphony "Mahler... Just Go!" at Juanita K. Hammons Hall, 6:30 p.m., $9-$32
If you're in the mood for something a little classier, enjoy the Springfield Symphony's classical ode to Mahler. The pre-concert lecture starts at 6:30 p.m., pre-concert music at 7 p.m., and the actual concert at 7:30 p.m. Mahler-volous, darling.
Sunday
Misery at Landers Theatre, 2:30 p.m., $15-$23
No matter how gloomy your weekend is, it's peaches and cream compared to that of poor Paul Sheldon, the held-for-hostage author in this Stephen King-penned story. Nathan Shelton directs, George Cron and Nicole Harrell star, and creepiness reigns.
Regular Sunday bands, everywhere, 9-10 p.m. to close, Free
Chase the weekend with your favorite bands from among Sunday's regulars, each of them 100 percent free. See Art Bentley at Springfield Brewing Company (9 p.m.), Members Only at Coesters (9:30 p.m.) and Shawn and Marcus at Ebbets Field (10 p.m.).
'Til next week!
