Bikini contest, 'rasslin and tractor pulls. It's all in a week's work

Finally, after weeks of preliminary-round bikini contests, the Electric Cowboy bikini competition final is upon us. (Guys, get excited.) Tonight, the ladies in bikinis will strut their stuff down the runway in hopes of winning the grand prize: A cruise package for two in the Bahamas. Also—smile pretty for the GO Team camera, 'cause the girls are checking out the competition. If you were at the last bikini contest we went to, check out your pics here.

If you prefer combat over contests, hit up the ladies Jell-O wrestling matches at Ray’s Lounge tomorrow night, August 1. The lightweight (140 lbs and under) combatants will begin battling it... Read more »

Cadence Drum Show on America's Got Talent... tonight

ICON Nightclub's Cadence Drum Show, the talented group of guys who cause all that racket just when you're about to put the move on that pretty baby across the dance floor, will make its first appearance on NBC's America's Got Talent television show tonight. We knew the guys had gone to Vegas, but just how far they've made it remains a mystery—now we'll get to see them in action... and see just what Sharon Osborne thinks of a dozen sweaty men swinging sticks.

This from Cadence drummer and 2008 20 Under 30 Brandon Alexander's Facebook page:

Hey guys. I don't know if you all have been messaged yet, but The Cadence will be on this Tuesday! NBC! 8:00! the 29th! Be sure to watch and look for us. Anyone who lives in Springfield... Read more »

Angry Panda, Ha Ha Tonka make waves

A bit of local musical gossip from outside Springfield:

First, Angry Panda (aka Tim Miano) will play a set on The Warped Tour on August 8... in Boise, Idaho.

From A.P. himself:

"GO Magazine's solo artist of the year finalist Angry Panda is taking his Springfield, MO inspired folk punk sound to Boise ID for a set at Warped Tour on August 8.  The performance will be on the Kia Kevin Says Stage representing global A&R website SonicBids.com.  While there he will be promoting the re-release of his 2006 album, "Hey, Mr. Meano!", which can be found in the local section at most of Springfield's record stores.  After the two-day drive home Angry Panda will be performing at Springfield Brewing Co. on  Saturday, August... The Set List, too hot to handle

Not to kick a dead horse, but it's hot out there. How hot? Hot enough for a third layer of deodorant as you head out to a weekend full of excellent shows, movies and other stuff to do.

Sweltering goodness after the jump.

Friday

Chords of Wallkill, Babies Don't Drink Milk, Jesse James Wax Museum at Nathan P. Murphy's, 7 p.m., Cover TBA
This show is worth the cover (whatever it is) if just for the band names. Fortunately, at least the first and third bands are high-quality. The other reason to go is Murphy's itself, still the most charismatic venue in town.

Lonestar at the Ozark Empire Fair, up to $25, 7:30... Read more »

The Running Man: Prelude

Our IT guru and staff photographer, Kevin O'Riley, has agreed to take on a 12-week training program, courtesy of St. John's Fitness Center, to get into shape for the Sunshine Run 5K or 10K on October 11. Over the next few months, he'll be keep you up to speed on his progress.

So, sometimes we open our mouths without thinking. We've all done it; sometimes it embarrasses us, sometimes it gets us in trouble... and sometimes it makes us have more to do.

Such was the case on a recent slip of the tongue that has resulted in my having to get up at 5:30 in the morning and sweat more than any IT guy should.

Read more from Kevin, after the jump.

Here’s a little background on the situation.

We, the GO staff, are... Read more »

Addressing fallout from the Lincoln Hough interview

This is what we get for covering politicians.

A bit of a furor erupted on our local paper's op-ed comments board today about our July 9 issue interview Lincoln Hough, written by yours truly. The third-person introduction to the article included the statement that Lincoln is on a waiting list for the University of Colorado's law school.

First, a correction. According to Lincoln, he is not on the list and has no intention of attending the school in Boulder or any other law school. His exact statement on the subject, (which we have recorded, and fell within the context of "what have you been doing since you graduated from Missouri State... Read more »

Make toast, win contest

Big Whiskey's American Bar & Grill is asking the Springfield public to submit their favorite toasts (not heated bread with jam, but a raise-the-glass tribute to something-or-other) over the next few months, with three finalists facing off for prizes in November.

"The Great American Toast-Off" began this Monday, July 21; a winner will be chosen on August 20, September 20 and October 20, with those three winners to be voted on to determine a grand-prize winner.

Prizes include $20 Big Whiskey's gift certificates and their toast on Big Whiskey's website for the preliminary winners, and a BW party for 10 for the grand-prize champion. Leave your hand-written toast with your watier, or just drop it by the restaurant.

Feel free to practice your... Read more »
