Okay, false alarm

...for now.

[Editor: Updated to indicate KY3 did not, in fact, ignore the man-falls-from-tower story. We'd just take this whole damn post down, but after a roundtable yesterday that focused on accountability in the new media... well, we'll just feel silly and then move on.]

The weather pundits are saying most of the snow will come this afternoon and early evening. M'kay.

While we're on the subject of news, how 'bout that guy who fell or jumped off the cellular tower downtown (just north of the MLK Bridge on Kimbrough) yesterday evening? Apparently he got tangled in the beams and just hung there literally for hours before rescue workers could bring him down. No one's really saying if it was suicide or an accident at this point...... Snow (Hey Oh)

There's more powder on the ground outside than at an Amy Winehouse-themed Grammy party. Springfield schools are letting out early (12:50) today, so be on the lookout for buses a little earlier than ususal. No word yet on local universities (we're really hoping our class tonight is cancelled, so we can watch Lost), but we'll keep you posted. No word yet on how this affects tonight's GO preview of Grease or the VIP opening at Jewel Nightclub.

Just wanted to give you a heads up: We've extended our Fashion Icons nomination period by one day—you've got until midnight tonight to send us your nominations and photographs of people you consider... Read more »

The GO Team is eclectic; win ultimate fighting tickets!

The GO Team is just starting to recover from our Bartenders' Bash and gear up for another action-packed weekend. We’ve got theatre, clubs with near-naked women, ultimate fighting and Art Walk on the brain. Go figure!

• Thursday, the GO Team will be at the preview night for Grease at Springfield Little Theatre. GO Magazine is sponsoring Grease, which opens to the public Friday, February 1 and runs through February 17. If you don’t love Grease, you’re not human. Go see it.

• From there, they’ll hit up the VIP opening of Jewel Nightclub, also on Thursday night. If you didn’t get an invite, just sit tight. Jewel officially opens to the public Friday. We highly suggest you... Read more »

Tuesday odds and ends

• Tomorrow, the Tour of Missouri will announce the route for its 2008 race. The inaugural event was an unqualified success, and there has been drama over which cities should get to host a beginning or ending tour stage, and how often. We suspect Springfield will be on the list (all indications are things are looking good), but we'll be interested to find out for sure.

• Your February 1 February 2 Mystery Hour lineup is a good one: Big Momma's owner Lyle Foster, Askinosie Chocolate kingpin Shawn Askinosie and the musical talents of Nathaniel Carroll.

• Someone wrote a Yelp! review of... Read more »

Your Monday blog roundup

What to read while you quietly pine for spring. Real spring, not this short-lived tomfoolery we're seeing right now.

• The editor commiserates with Le Marmot (he often drives a VW). Snarling Marmot

• David Catanese has been busy. Get used to it. KY3 Political Notebook

• This is a bit old, but too funny not to post. Gregory Holman

The Set List is anything but trivial

It's the final full weekend of January, and thank goodness—so far 2008 has either been bitterly cold or spinning death.

Fortunately, it's going out with a jam-packed weekend, even if the stupid NFL does need a full two weeks before the Super Bowl... talk about a mood-killer.

We'll go more in-depth after the jump, but we have a big event this weekend that we'd love you all to attend—it's our first-ever Bartenders' Bash at the Clarion Hotel on Sunday (3 to 5 p.m.). Lotsa drinks for one small cover charge? That's easier to say "yes" to than Tom... Read more »

A 417-lander remembers Heath Ledger

We, like most of the celeb-consuming public, were pretty stunned to hear of Heath Ledger's fatal (accidental?) overdose on Tuesday afternoon. We immediately turned to office-mate and 417 Magazine senior editor Katie Pollock, who used to work in a Brooklyn sandwich shop while she was an intern at Maxim magazine, and regularly waited on the actor and his then-partner Michelle Williams.

Katie was gracious enough to share a few words (very nicely stated ones, we might add) with GO. She didn't really know him, but it's as close as anyone around these parts will come. Read her words after the jump.

It sounds really stupid to care, I’m sure, because I certainly didn’t know the guy. But it was pretty cool to interact with him a little bit.... Read more »

A new lunch stop

Coesters is now open at 631 S. Kimbrough Ave. A few members of the GO staff ate there yesterday, and pronounced it worth the wait (the place has been in the works for a couple of years).

The new bar/restaurant, owned by Jordan Creek mastermind Mark Coe (hence the name, see?) IS a sports bar, but one with a more refined decor along the lines of J.Buck's, as opposed to the memorabilia-heavy Classic's Sports. Prices are also closer to J.Buck's than other bar/restaurants like Big Whiskey's.

The bar has a strict Missouri State University theme, the centerpiece of which is a custom-crafted neon sign in the shape of the Missouri State athletic logo, which is intricate indeed.

We'll bring you a full review soon, but first impressions are favorable.... Read more »
