The Set List celebrates its 10-year high school reunion this weekend. Yes, it's a little-known fact that The Set List graduated from Ozark High School in 1998. The Set List and its days-of-yore cronies (and their somewhat awkward-feeling significant others) will be on hand at the Springfield Cardinals game tonight, so drop by and say hi. Or don't.
To celebrate, we're highlighting the best events of the weekend, and dropping one pop-culture bomb song from 1998 that might be fun to watch or listen to before you go out. Why? 'Cause reminiscing is F-U-N!
Friday
Wes Jeans at Nathan P. Murphy's, 7 p.m., Cover TBA
This blues-rocker blows through Springfield every few months, and always at Nathan P. Join the fun tonight at the oh-so-laid back Murphy's, and let Wanda serve you a cold one.
'98 nostalgia song: "Sex and Candy", Marcy Playground: Smoking is outlawed at Murphy's. Sex and candy are not.
The Mystery Hour at The Skinny Improv Comedy Theatre, 10:15 p.m., $3
For season number three, The Mystery Hour has moved to First Fridays, the better to capitalize on big downtown crowds, my dear. For now the show is still $3, so enjoy Jeff Houghton's witty banter with local luminaries.
'98 nostalgia song: "Tubthumping", Chumbawamba: For some reason we can see Houghton really liking this song.
Gretchen Wilson at the Ozark Empire Fair, 8 p.m., $15-$25
The country minx plays tonight before some sweaty fans, who hope the concert is a lot like one of her videos, even though it probably won't be. Agruably the biggest name to play Springfield this year.
'98 nostalgia song: "This Kiss", Faith Hill: Faith paved the way for a softer, sexier Nashville. We salute you.
Jell-O wrestling at Ray's Lounge, 9:30 p.m., $5
Ray sets the women's movement back 20 years with his raucous Jello-O wrestling night. Don't miss the splatter-fest.
'98 nostalgia: "One Week", Barenaked Ladies: The band name says it all.
Saturday
Springfield Cardinals vs. Tulsa, 6:10 p.m., $5.50-$25.50
Tonight's game is at 6:10 p.m., which means you'll have time to party afterwards. It's also BIONICLE battle night, whatever that means
'98 nostalgia: "Victory", Puff Daddy and the Family: Let's hope!
BringYourGreenHat at Brew Co., 10 p.m., $3
These guys have an easy sound, with some nice harmonies and acoustical vibe. Perfect for Brew Co. on a Saturday night.
'98 nostalgia: "Candle In the Wind '97", Elton John: You can bet Princess Di wouldn't have forgotten her green hat.
Sunday
Karaoke at Electric Cowboy, 7 p.m., Free
The EC breaks out the Springfield Karaoke on Sunday nights, which sounds like a pretty good way to pass the night, assuming there are drink specials.
'98 nostalgia: "How Do I Live", LeAnn Rimes: Just listen to it, so you won't be tempted to sing it.
Art Bentley at Brew Co., 9 p.m., Free
Art's regular Sunday set has been going on seemingly since 1998. We're cool with that.
'98 nostalgia: "Ghetto Superstar (That Is What You Are)", Pras Feat. Ol' Dirty Bastard and Mya: Because Art is one.
'Til next week!
