The Set List: The Deep Breath

Labor Day weekend is, traditionally, the deep breath before the plunge. One last weekend of relaxin', chillin' and no-Monday-workin' before the fall and important matters like school and end-of-year business take priority.

Not that it's a bad thing. With cooler weather and students' return come more concerts, events, and stuff to do. So, for one final weekend, the Set List cuts it short. We'll be back double time next week, we promise.

Have fun and be safe this holiday week

Friday

S-Foil at Lindberg's, $3, 9 p.m.
We don't get up to Lindberg's as often as we'd like, but the place is a live-music machine. Six nights a week, legitimate bands take the stage. Tonight is S-Foil. So go rock on C-Street if you know what's good for... Read more »

August: The month in review

It's our final business day in August. Here's a look back at the Dog Days of August, as told by the GO Blog.

• Another 417-lander earns the title of "reality TV" champion.

• Mustaches just got a lot less popular downtown. Adios, Hickok's.

• Boyz II Men helped us boot Hot List finalists to the curb.

Calling all Interns

Here at GO Magazine, we take care of our interns. We give them interesting assignments, sometimes feed them, and in the case of one (Prison Mike) give them Office-related nicknames. It's all very fun. On occasion these interships turn into jobs, which is more fun.

The good news for you: We need interns for the fall 2008 and spring 2009 semesters. GO Magazine is now seeking qualified college students to fill internship slots in two areas:

Editorial/online: Editorial interns will work 10-15 hours a week with the editor, writing stories for GO Magazine's biweekly deadline, coordinating print and online event calendars, and readying content for GO Magazine and 417 Magazine... Read more »

The Hot List issue of GO is out and online!

We apologize for the lack of posts in recent days: It's been a wacky three days, maybe the wackiest ever! (Except for the time the anteater got loose... but we digress.)

Right about now, the new issue of GO Magazine should be on racks. You can pick it up at your favorite restaurant or watering hole, or you can read our Hot List issue online, right now!

And as our apology for not being more blog-tastic these last few days, here's an advance peek at our Top 10 list, which appears in the new issue:

Top 10 Reasons Springfield Should Get the Olympics in 2016

10. The rest of the world already thinks America’s a bunch of hicks, anyway. Why not embrace... Read more »

The GO Team will make you sweat with Hotness

Beware of the upcoming heat wave, as GO’s Hot List issue hits newsstands today (August 27). For the past two years, the GO staff has presented The Hot List: 56 Things We Love Right Now. This year, we added a twist and asked you to choose what’s hot in 10 categories through our online vote (more than 4,000 of you voted!).

Today, the 10 winners will be revealed along with the other 46 Hot List items as chosen by the GO staff. After you explore The Hot List issue, mark your calendar for Saturday, September 6, from 8-11 p.m. for the final heat wave of the summer: The Hot List Block Party on Park Central East. GO will be kicking your summer to the curb (NKOTB style) at five of your favorite bars: Level 2, Trolley’s, Fedora,... Read more »

GO welcomes its bundle of joy

Allow us a brief-moment of self-indulgence to congratulate our publisher, Logan Aguirre, and her husband Dave on their new daughter, Lucy Jacqueline Aguirre.

Lucy was born yesterday evening at just more than 7 lbs. Both mother and baby are fit as fiddles (and dad, too).

Congratulations from all of us on the Whitaker Publishing staff!

Get Toasted

The folks at Big Whiskey's like to share their submitted toasts with us, especially when there's a contest on (like there is right now). Every month or so they're picking a winner from the dozens they receive scrawled on a napkin. Later this fall, an overall winner will be chosen and get all sorts of cool stuff.

This time around the winner was one John Harmon. Here's his submission:

"Here's to a beer/There's to a shot,
Let all your problems/now be forgot.
1 leads to 2/2 leads to 10,
Come back to Whiskey's/and do it again."

Think you can do better? We think you can. Go have a beer and write it on your napkin. Deadline for the second round of submissions is September 15. [Note: Doesn't necessarily have to be a commercial for Big... Read more »
