The Great Downtown Game

Four issues that will help shape the future of our urban core.

It’s been a weird couple of years for downtown Springfield.

In October 2005, a messy incident occurred outside Traffic Downtown Club. Since then there’s been a fatal shooting and much discussion of violence. Ownership of Heer’s Tower has changed hands twice (and should do so again next month). But it’s still been more good than bad—Art Walk is a phenomenon, entertainment and the arts seem to be thriving, the nightlife scene is refining itself a bit (we weep the loss of Harpo’s but you can’t deny Kai is a step up) and positive steps are being taken to make Park Central Square relevant again.

The fulcrum on which the next two years turn: The arrival and success of  College Station and Heer’s Tower and the accompanying retail and parking space. This we know. But what are the other issues and trends currently in play on the ever-gentrifying game board known as Center City? Read on.
