Q.

Dear Mr. Foodie, what are your favorite toppings for hamburgers? It’s tailgate season!

A.

1. Chinese hot mustard. Frequently sold in little pots for $1.59 or so. Tastes almost like imported Dijon at half the price.
2. Aioli, a.k.a. garlic mayo. Making real aioli is fun but time-consuming. Fake aioli: In a small bowl, combine a quarter cup of mayonnaise, one-half tablespoon of olive oil, and a heaping tablespoon of minced garlic from the jar. Mix.
3. A simple purée of avocado is great, especially for turkey burgers. Or buy guacamole from the grocery.
4. Arugula leaves.
5. The sharpest cheddar you can find.
6. Red onion.
7. Cracked black pepper and sea salt.
8. Roasted red peppers.
9. Cheese spreads like Alouette and Boursin.
10. Cilantro.
