Hypes and Gripes
• Hypes to JQH officials for somehow landing The Eagles to open the new arena on November 13. These guys are legends in many people’s minds and are at least liked by the rest—“Desperado” might be the best eighth-grade slow-dance song EVER. Nice get; we can’t wait for more.
• Gripes to the CU bus-route schedule, which somehow resulted in two CU buses stopping across the street from each other on East St. Louis Street at the exact same time last Wednesday afternoon. We presume they duplicated each other’s routes the rest of the way down the street. Whether this is a common occurrence or just a mess-up we don’t know, but it’s wasteful either way.
• Hypes to Shawn Askinosie. Say what you will about Shawn’s former career; the man has a passion for his current one. A brief but interesting tour of Askinosie Chocolate is sweet enough (literally) by itself, but his near-diatribes about sustainability on Mexican plantations and his views on C-Street (he’s in favor of keeping shelters) are as inspiring as they are refreshing.
• Hypes to Coesters for starting twice-weekly live music, one night of which (Friday) features the always-groovin’ Arzo Tureaud and friends. At a time when places seem to be ditching the music, not bringing it in, having real jazz and a fun ’80s cover night (Sunday) is a nice change.
