Ask Mr. Foodie

Frozen pizza is only lowbrow if you let it be..

Ask Mr. Foodie

Q. Isn’t frozen pizza repulsive?

A. Not necessarily. Mr. Foodie thinks if you avoid buying off-brands you can have a nice meal with frozen pizza. His current favorite is the Pizza Torino, sold at Target for $4, with goat cheese, Emmental, spinach and tomato on a crust, entirely produced in Italy. Take it home, top it with some flat Italian parsley and you’re good to go. The key is personalizing frozen pizza with your own toppings. Buy a good four-cheese pizza (DiGiorno, California Pizza Kitchen, etc.) and top with easy things from cans: olives, artichoke quarters, capers, canned stewed tomatoes (drain them first!). Or use fresh mushrooms, herbs. Buy pepperoni and salami and cut down on fat by chopping some up in little slivers and sprinkling it on your pizza. If you’re all fancy-like, you can use this same approach with prepared pizza crusts like Boboli and bake your own.
