"I vant to drink your blood..."

A decidedly non-hokey presentation of Dracula opens tonight at the Vandivort.

Hypes and Gripes

Yay for local students and ladies with pretty ears; Boo to sloppy B-roll editing and rude restaurant workers.

• We don’t pretend to understand the whole “B-roll” thing, but we still think we should Gripe local TV stations that used close-up shots of Trolley’s and its sign during stories about the downtown fight that left a man seriously injured. The fight didn’t start at Trolley’s, it started in a private residence above the bar and spilled onto the sidewalk. Trolley’s was the unfortunate backdrop. Somewhere, Traffic’s owners are nodding.

Hypes to all the student organizations that are doing great things this time of year to raise money for local charities. Case in point: Drury University’s Lambda Chi Alpha chapter recently donated $5,000—in addition to the take from their annual canned food drive—to a local food pantry. Greeks party, sure, but they do great stuff, too. PR chairs—send us your good deeds and we’ll try to post them on our blog from time to time.

Gripes to Acoustic Café. It’s a great lunch stop, but last week’s incident left us a bit upset. At 11 a.m. (an hour after posted opening time) we tried to walk in, but the door was locked. A chap was working behind the counter, but instead of motioning, or better yet sticking his head out the door and saying “I overslept” or “We’re having some plumbing problems,” he simply hung a “We’re opening late” sign on the door and walked away.

• A big Hype for Marybeth Brush, KOLR 10’s jack-of-all-trades and the winner of our Eargasm grand prize (pictured, left). Earlier this year, Marybeth won a preliminary Eargasm round, where readers select the “best ear” by voting online, which got her $250 to spend at Car-Fi, the contest’s sponsor. Last month, she beat all other winners for the grand prize—$1,000 cash from Car-Fi and the title of “most famous ears in the Ozarks.”
