2-Minute Review: Hebrews Coffee

2-Minute Review: Hebrews Coffee

Hebrews Coffee is a “Revelation”. Christian-oriented but in no way overt, the newest coffee shop in town is simply a pleasant, low-frills shop in southeast Springfield, a district devoid of a laid-back neighborhood coffee joint not named Starbucks or Panera Bread. Hebrews takes the place of the old (and also Christian) Churchill Coffee in the French Quarter Plaza on Republic Road. Here’s why Hebrews (1604 E. Republic Rd.) it had us doing back-“Philippians”.

The Place: Hebrews is exquisitely clean, with deep brown earth tones and lots of abstract art for sale on every wall. It feels secluded, though there’s plenty of natural light in the front of the shop. Comfy seating in the front and back, as well as free wifi, make it a place you could park for a while during a light work day.

The Service: My barista was extremely nice and made easy conversation—a nice change from other shops where “too hip to talk” seems to be a mantra. She knew the menu, and had my specialty coffee to my table quickly.

The Menu: The menu items here have the potential to be “Colossians”. Though my mid-morning visit was too early for lunch, Hebrews does offer a half dozen or so sandwiches (including hot options like meatball), quiches, soups and salads. 10:15 a.m. is, however, a time for coconut macaroons. I ate two, and they are two of the best cookies I’ve had in Springfield, hands down, especially at .65 cents apiece. Fresh-baked muffins, breads and other sweet treats were available as well. Hebrews offers a full specialty coffee bar and a few drip options (light, medium and decaf). My pumpkin spice coffee—a pumpkin latte—was flavored just right and quite large for $2.95. Nothing on the menu costs more than $6.55.

The Verdict: If you work or live on the south side, Hebrews should become your regular coffee stop. It’s less crowded, more affordable and more charismatic than the chain-gang, and will help you chill out with tasty beverages and an affordable menu. New Testament puns aside, you really should “Acts” now.
