Introducing GOnection
Get your mingle on at the new monthly mixer hosted by GO Magazine.
By Evan Fisk
GO Magazine has had its share of raucous, debauchery-filled nights around town. (A recent night out involved a stripper pole, although the pictures have mysteriously vanished.) But sometime, you have to grow up. Oh sure, you’re still going to see our GO Team out and about, snapping Faces on the GO at all sorts of major social happenings. But on March 15, we’ll also be starting an endeavor for the business-minded folks. After all, sometimes you just want to have a few drinks and make some new friends, then head home and get to bed early. Enter GOnection.GOnection is the best new networking event in town. It’s basically a chance for young professionals to network in a non-threatening environment. (Think Rotaract without the dues or obligations.) On the third Thursday of every month, GO Magazine will host a free networking happy hour at a bar or restaurant around town. GOnection will be a place young businessmen and women can meet and greet in a comfortable, social environment. No dress codes, no admission fees, no monthly dues and no attendance requirements. Just some food, a few drinks and a little conversation time.
Everything about the event is meant to be comfortable and useful. You’re not going to have a good conversation interrupted by someone on a microphone making announcements. It’s more like happy hour than a formal banquet, after all. You can wear jeans and a T-shirt or head straight from work in your suit and tie. Young entrepreneurs can show up, have a snack, mingle with other motivated locals and share tales of future business dreams. Students can meet potential employers or try to hook up a future internship. And although events like this generally attract a lot of business people—real estate agents, small-business owners, etc.—anyone who works in any field (starving artists need to network, too!) is welcome to show up and let loose.
GOnections begin March 15. The first one will be at Ophelia’s Tapas and Wine Bar (431 S. Jefferson Ave. Suite 160, 417-862-7200). It’s free unless you want to spend a few bucks on drinks, and there will even be some light appetizers provided. And you thought GO didn’t have a grown-up side.
