Hot Diminutive DJ:

Lindsay Blake
From the moment we spied Lindsay Blake crawling, on hands and knees, down the runway before our Fashion Icons show in February, we’ve been a little bit smitten. Okay, it’s more like obsessed. Power 96.5’s promotions director and lunch-hour voice is pint-sized but provocative—she’ll say things on air that we’re a bit squeamish to type from the safety of a computer. Here’s to you, Lindsay—don’t ever change.

Hot 180:

Nathan P. Murphy’s goes smoke-free
Stop us if you saw this coming: Murphy’s (216 S. Campbell Ave.) a blues and rock club in the classic, smoke-and-neon-lights sense for 26 years, put the butts out and is cleaning up its act, led in part by recent health problems for owner Bob Martin. After MudHouse and MudLounge, Murphy’s is only the third downtown nightlife spot to go smoke-free, and the first music venue.

Hot ridiculous rock event:

Ozarks Regional Air Guitar Championships
We must admit we were a bit skeptical when we first heard about this air guitar business, organized in Springfield by Moxie owners Dan and Nicole Chilton. But by the time the finals were over on June 2, we were believers: This is something anyone can do, but only a special few can do well. The Ozarks’ inaugural winner, Warren “Slick Whiskers” Sandwell, made a fine showing at the Midwest regionals in Dallas (he finished fourth out of more than two dozen competitors). We expect even more excellent things next year.

Hot “They’re breeding like rabbits” part 1:

Resale Shops
Trendy or quirky second-hand shops aren’t just a Center City phenomenon, though you could be forgiven for thinking so. Vintage Vice (214 S. Campbell Ave.) and Zoey’s Vintage and Name Brand Clothing (322 Park Central East) bookend downtown with affordable vintage wear and accessories, and The Style (211 E. Commercial St.) is great for true old-school duds. In parts south (and east), The Plaid Door (1920 E. Sunshine St.), Plato’s Closet (3420 S. Glenstone Ave.) and Name Brand Clothing (2832 S. Glenstone Ave.) are a few of the better spots for buying or selling pre-worn apparel on the cheap—we even know a few people who make a small mint re-selling stuff on eBay. Capitalism rules.

Hot Weatherman:

Dave Snider
We can safely say that KY3’s Dave Snider is one of the most likeable people on local airwaves. Not only can he ad lib his way through a crappy radar sequence, he can also pull off a snazzy tweed-and-pink-Polo ensemble in the face of breaking severe weather. He has news cred, too, as evidenced by his early summer package about the dangers of tick bites, complete with creepy Jaws–like background music. Additionally, Dave, along with his wife, Mary Helen, is a respected local blogging presence (he didn’t want to reveal a bunch of info about it for work reasons, but it won’t take you long to find his site on our blog roll).
