Hypes and Gripes
• Gripes to hypocritical citizens (including more than one GO staffer) who failed to vote on August 5. You might not believe it, but just because Barack Obama isn’t running doesn’t mean you can’t be younger than 35 and go to the polls. We didn’t believe it either, but we looked it up. We trust everyone will do better in November.
• Hypes to Derek White and his fellow organizers of the baseball league for underprivileged kids that plays on Saturdays in Grant Beach Park. White and friends circulated flyers in schools themselves; one team even features a group of mostly hearing-impaired kids. It’s such grass roots efforts that landed White on our 20 Under 30 list in 2007, and we respect him for helping Springfieldians whom many of us may never think about.
• Super Gripes to the Hippy-ocrites who cut my husband and I off on Glenstone in their blue Volkswagen bus covered in “love” stickers. When my husband honked because he had to slam on his brakes and turn the car to avoid hitting them, they gave us the one finger salute about 50 times and waved us over for a throw down. All of this because they had to get to the Village Inn, stat. With hippies like that who needs Republicans? P.S. We would have gladly let them over. Peace.—Submitted by a reader via the Hypes and Gripe portal at springfieldgo.com.
• Gripes to the city for shutting down Ray’s Lounge’s Jell-O wrestling promotions. Seems it might have been a good thing to tell him right off the bat, not after more than a year of great business from such nights. It’s not like they were a secret. But rules are rules. Let’s hope Ray finds another way to have fun.
